Diagnosed at age 47

On September 26, 2022, I read three words that changed my life forever, “invasive lobular carcinoma.” I read these words on my health portal while at work listening to a presentation. Not only did those three words change my life forever, but the message of the presentation did too: “be present and in the moment.” While this is extremely hard to practice while waiting patiently for answers and next steps for your treatment journey, it’s the best advice that I can give to any fellow survivor. Enjoy time with family and friends. Laugh, cry, and be honest with your feelings. Don’t stop living your life. And finally, don’t compare your fight to others. This was the hardest part of my journey. Though I was fortunate by not having to face chemo or radiation, I had 5 surgeries in 10 months and still have more to go and years of hormone therapy. My fight may be easier than others, but it’s still hard and disrupted my life. Survivorship is hard with any treatment journey. And finally, embrace the cancer community—we’ve got each other!
